Transportation Supervisor Rodney Ashcraft has been with Tri-Valley Local Schools for 20 years, and he said finding bus drivers has been a problem for most of his tenure. That is where it would be devastating to our community," Rupe said. "If you get to the point where you have two to three drivers out, there could be a time when we have to tell our families we can't bus that route. When that is disrupted, you have to problem solve, push back start times of games, combining routes.

"You get used to the bus showing up, and it is on time. "When you get used to a service, when it is disrupted it really causes problems," said Rupe. Rupe said without substitute bus drivers, teams mus wait to leave for games until after-school routes can be completed. "We have been working with coaches and schools to push start times of athletic events back when we can so we can have drivers available to take teams to games," Hittle said. Rupe said New Lexington has at least one event every day of the week except Sunday, and, on Friday night, needs five drivers to transport the football team, the band, the band equipment, and cheerleaders to away football games.Īlready this school year, both Zanesville and New Lexington athletics have felt the shortage.

Substitute bus drivers are needed when a regular, full-time bus driver can't work, or to transport students to extra circular activities like sporting events. But, even with relaxed social distancing rules and being able to transport more children per bus, the district still only has drivers for 17 of its 25 buses.

"At times, students have to wait at schools for a bus to finish one route before it can pick them up and take them home on a different route," Hittle said. The district went from serving students a mile or further from their school to serving students a mile and a half or further from their schools at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even without the threat of a disruption from a case of COVID-19 or quarantine, there are not enough drivers to go around. Should a driver get sick or call off work the ripple effect touches everyone, said Matt Hittle, director of facilities/services for Zanesville City Schools. However, school routes must be filled, and student athletes need transportation to their games. More: COVID-19 pandemic amplifies school bus driver shortage concerns USA Today recently reported there are 55,000 fewer bus drivers nationwide than two years ago, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. "It really is a day-by-day problem we have to solve."Īnd it's not just a local problem. "Transportation right now is a very fragile situation when it comes to substitutes," said David Rupe, the district's director of operations. Some days, school officials are left scrambling due to a shortage of substitute bus drivers. Most mornings, 17 buses leave the New Lexington City Schools bus garage, and fan out across central Perry County.
